62 63 Frame III _ The fusion of entertainment and education The goal of education is not merely to transmit knowledge, but to cultivate understanding that leads to action. Yet abstract themes, such as climate change or biodiversity, are difficult to sustain children’s interest through conventional methods. This is where the concept of edutainment – the fusion of education and entertainment – becomes essential. Entertainment has the power to move emotions. People learn most deeply, remember most clearly, and change most profoundly when they are emotionally engaged. To realize Nature Positive Education, we must bridge knowledge and emotion, and entertainment can serve as that bridge. Stories, music, animation, and art translate abstract ideals into tangible and immersive experiences. A symbolic example is my picture book Latair and the Earth Saver: the story follows a boy who, through the magic of Latair – the spirit of the Earth – transforms himself into endangered animals and decides to become an Earth Saver to protect life. Far more than fantasy, it allows children to experience the global environmental crisis through their own emotional lens, helping them understand the bond between humans and nature. This work has been adapted into an animated series on Japan’s national educational television channel and is being developed in multiple languages and cultures. Animation, through visual and auditory immersion, enhances empathy and engagement. It has also been incorporated into English-learning materials and workshops. Within the Earth Saver Project, children engage in observation, craft-making, and discussion based on the animals and environments featured in the story. Such entertainment-based education prioritizes the sharing of meaning, over the accumulation of knowledge. Through empathy with characters, children discover within themselves the desire to protect life. Abstract concepts such as conservation and regeneration are internalized as personal values through the medium of narrative and emotion. The story also serves as a symbol of diversity. The animals depicted, each living in different habitats, are all portrayed as friends of the Earth. This visually expresses the Nature Positive principle of coexistence beyond differences. Art and storytelling thus broaden children’s worldviews and nurture welcoming towards diverse cultures and ecosystems. The true value of entertainment in education lies in its ability to create sustained engagement. Learning only gains meaning when it extends into daily life. Stories, music, and film feed a continuous reflection on nature, serving as a cultural foundation that sustains intrinsic motivation. In this way, multi-layered creative approaches provide the long-term scaffolding for Nature Positive Education. Frame IV _ Connecting isolated children through global education The younger the child, the narrower their social world. Within the limited sphere of family and school, children who care about sustainability often feel isolated. The feeling that nothing I do can change the world easily takes root. To overcome this psychological barrier, we must build platforms that connect children globally. Digital technology now allows children worldwide to learn, discuss, and collaborate simultaneously. In Nature Positive Education, this networked learning is crucial. Knowing that there are peers across the planet who share their hopes gives children strength and meaning in their actions. Through the Earth Saver Project, children from around the world gather online and occasionally hold global summits to share ideas and solutions. Their contributions are visualized digitally and, by celebrating each other’s efforts, they form a global learning community. This education is grounded not in competition, but in co-creation. No one dictates the correct answer; each child shares their own story of protecting local nature, experiencing diversity and unity simultaneously. The sense of isolation transforms into a new collective awareness: I am part of the Earth. Within this framework, the use of common languages such as English goes beyond linguistic skill. Language is a vessel for culture and thought. When children from different regions exchange views on how they see nature, they engage in genuine international education. Nature Positive Education, like biodiversity itself, must respect cultural diversity within humanity. The goal of globally connected education is to turn the feeling of I can’t save the world alone into We can change it together. That shared hope leads to real action; action transforms communities; and community transformation ultimately changes the world. Education is the first ripple in that wave, and Nature Positive Education is the blueprint for spreading it across the planet.
